What are ceramic dental implants?

Why choose metal free ceramic dental implants?

Bio-compatibility

• Ceramic dental implants are made of zirconia.  Being a non-metal, zirconia does not suffer corrosion. It will not conduct electricity or heat.  As a bio inert material, it will never trigger chemical reactions or migrate to other body sites.

• Corrosion is the gradual degradation of materials by electro-chemical attack. This is a concern particularly when a metallic implant is placed in the hostile electrolytic environment provided by our oral cavity.

• The clinical significance of metal degradation related to metallic dental implants is evidenced by corrosion and wear products found in the tissues surrounding the implants. These products can ultimately lead to bone loss around the implant.

• Many authors report increased concentrations of local and systemic trace metals in association with metal dental implants. These metals become ions in the body and bind to body proteins. For those that react to these, the body will try to attack this structure, starting a chain of reactions which can lead to many symptoms including chronic fatigue syndrome.

• Zirconia is inert and therefore hypoallergenic. With the growing number of people who are developing skin sensitivities, allergies and have compromised immune systems, zirconia dental implants might be a great option. Labs using MELISA technology have reported that about 4% of all patients tested to titanium will be allergic to it. For those suffering from allergy to an implanted titanium, symptoms can be multiple, ranging from simple skin rashes to muscle pain and fatigue.

• Several studies show that titanium alloys contain nickel which can trigger health problems in patients with nickel allergy.

• Zirconia is 100% white meaning that patients with thin translucent gums, or those prone to gum recession will not end up with a grey area at the gum margin.

One piece design

• Traditional implants consist of two components, the fixture lodged into the jaw bone and the overlying abutment that sits above the gum line, joined together with a fixation screw.

• Micro movements can occur when these pieces meet together under our intense chewing pressure, creating moist, warm areas where anaerobic bacteria can colonise.

• Toxins released from bacteria can lead to inflammation around the implant, eventually leading to bone loss.

• Zirconia dental implants are a one piece design. This means no junctions and therefore no micro movements between implant parts.

This all contributes to its excellent bio-compatibility and contributes further to implant success.

One stage surgery
